There is no gainsaying the fact that the use of white garment in the Nigeria entertainment circle has largely been for wrong purposes. This passes for a case of a producer who has a character of a fake prophet and the costume that readily comes to mind is a white garment.
So much that this particular trend has come of age, it reared its ugly head again in the past couple of days and it was indeed an eyesore, as it usually appears. The graphic attached to this piece speaks volumes. As this rubs off on members of the white garment church across the world, thus negatively, we won't cease to put the record straight that we are not what exists in their imagination which they, in turn, portray us to be in the media. We are a Christian body that believes in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and does nothing contrary to the word of God.
Upon seeing a video titled: FALSE MESSENGER which was published by a popular Instagram skit maker where he used a character wearing white garment, we immediately sent a message informing him that we are not what he depicted us to be, just as we demanded to know why he chose to tow such path. He soon replied, explaining why he would not have deliberately tarnish the image of the church through such skit. While clarifying that he has relationship with members of the church, he said his group values and respect the body of Christ.
Though, we see the response as an apparent afterthought, but as a media group that projects the activities of the church, the onus is on us to checkmate this ugly trend in the best possible way we can. We believe reaching out to them to correct their impression and, as such, sensitize them will go a long way. Without doubt, bad eggs abound everywhere, ditto for every denomination. Equally, there have been spirited efforts across denominations to ensure that the Body of Christ is sanitised and orderliness restored. This is with no exception to the white garment churches.
Like drops of water that eventually make an ocean, we would continue to make this move, steadily so, when the need arises. It is, therefore, the responsibility of every Seraph and members of the white garment church as a whole to follow suit. And for those of us who ply our trade in the entertainment sector and find ourselves culpable of this, it's not too late to have a rethink, make adjustments and speak up against it where necessary. Together we can put a stop to this sheer stereotype that smacks of gross misrepresentation of the fold.
